Eighteen Cousins

Every once in a while, I am reminded of a great book that was read to me or I either read myself when I was a child. One of the books that recently came to mind is Eighteen Cousins. Why you ask? Well, because they were everywhere. The only difference it that there was more than one of us and more than 18 of them at a recent family reunion we attended. In fact, there were a couple of hundred cousins. Some I knew and many I had never met before, but I surely didn’t leave without meeting as many of them as I could.

You can see by the tattered binding that this book has been through a lot. Well, what do you expect after managing to hang around for more than 40+ years? That is compliments of my mother who saved just about anything and everything from our childhoods (my siblings too).

“Yes, yes, yes…I wrote in the book.” Okay, already. You should have heard me trying to explain to my children that I wrote in the book, but it wasn’t and isn’t the right thing to do. Just about every time we read this book, they remind me (as if I can’t see for myself) that I wrote in the book!

My past indiscretions are not what this post is about. I want to tell you about this book which is actually quite cute. My only warning is that you might find yourself saying “EIGHTEEN COUSINS a-looking at me!” and not be able to stop.

A little boy, who I assume is an only child, visits a family farm during the summer months to meet his cousins which total 18 after counting. Upon meeting, obvious shyness is experienced on both sides. The little boy walks around the farm visiting with the animals and enjoying his time in the open country air and immediately unbeknown to him, there are people following him; not just any people, but “EIGHTEEN COUSINS a-looking at me!”

He continues sniffing the flowers and walking barefoot through the garden and there they are again, “EIGHTEEN COUSINS a-looking at me!” Soon, the cousins are not only following him, but they are also imitating everything he does. What started as a quiet walk through the farm becomes a run down the lane and eventually a run through the meadow as the little boy runs, runs as fast as he can. What do you think he sees? “EIGHTEEN COUSINS a-running after me!”

Now, the book could take a terrifying twist (18 people chasing you can be quite frightening) or just end as happily as it was intended, which is does. There is just something amusing and fun about having so many cousins.
